How to boost food production in Kenya.

Small scale farmers, who hold over 80 percent of all farms in Kenya , are struggling to adapt with temperature rise and little amount of rainfall experienced annually. This is according to the metrological department.

Farmers are already striving with an increase in average temperatures, with further increases of between 1.5 to 2.5 degree Celsius in a period of twenty years to come but how can they increase their farm produce?

Application of artificial and organic fertiliser are some of the best methods of farming that can be deployed by farmers so as to increase farm produce. Under this the government of Kenya should have a fertilizer promotion program where they provide farmers with fertilizer at relatively low price which every farmer can afford.

To keep our soil healthy we need to apply the right fertilizer at the right time and in the right way at the right time.As this will ensure all nutrients required by plant are in the right propotions, thus avoiding nutrient deficiency hence increase in production.

Youth involvement. Young men and women in Kenya need to be involved in farming practices as this is one of the ways of creating employment to them. Agriculture contributes over 65 percent of labour. The higher the number of workers we have in our farms the higher the production, meaning we need more youth in this sector since they are energetic.

Ease fertilizer access. Fertilizer use in Kenya remains low compared to other regions in Africa, with an average of 20kgs per hectare while the global recommendation is 100kgs and above per hectare.

As a country we need to improve on two areas. First farmers need to improve their financial access to fertilizer and second to improve logistics on fertilizer distribution as this will make it ease to acquire and the availability across the country.About 39 percent of the cost of fertilizer is as result of transport from the port of Mombasa to farmers.

Provision of certified seeds. Kenyan governorment should distribute to farmers certified seeds and which are of high quality and that are suitable for planting in a particular environment. Most of the farmers who plant certified seeds yields from 50-100 percent compared to those who plant seeds of low quality.Kenya seeds company should be given mandate to ensure availability of these seeds across the country

With this we shall be able to increase food production in Kenya for both sale and consumption, thus even having hope for food security even during drought.

THE END…
